Unsung Heros
While very rarely talked about, the camp followers are just as important to Fort Mifflin as the soldiers. They are responsible for the care of the children, maintaining camp sanitation, gathering supplies, caring for the sick, caring for the wounded, washing clothes, repairing clothes, and cooking all the meals.
Morning meals consist of cornmeal cake or bread, coffee, and salt pork. Midday meals included pea soup with pork and bread rations. The evening meal will be beef or pork stew, root vegetables, and a small beer or cider to wash it all down. If you are lucky enough to have access to money, you have the option of desserts, wine, cheese, butter, and, because we sit on the Delaware River, fresh poultry. Although, with those impending British naval ships coming in, it can be dangerous to retrieve.
