Mother And Child
"This war will be fought not on the frontier or on some distant battlefield, but amongst us -- among our homes. Our children will learn of it with their own eyes. And the innocent will die with the rest of us."
~ Colonel Benjamin Martin
While most people think of Fort Mifflin as this rigid, military post, depleted of anything joyful, there is far more here that is often overlooked. Many families of Continental soldiers accompany them while stationed here. The wives and children become known as camp followers. Children breathe innocent joy in and around the fort. They spend their time playing in the parade ground, fishing in the Delaware while watching ships pass by, and observing artillery practice.
Creating a community within these walls, women are a crucial part of daily life at Fort Mifflin. They will cook the meals for soldiers. They wash and repair clothing, mend tents as well as equipment, look after the children, and care for the wounded and sick soldiers. The Continental Army relied heavily on these women and would have been incapable of supporting itself without them.
