Scars
With three forts in place, the plan is to hit the supply ships hard and cut the supply line off completely. The battle starts on September 26th and goes straight through until November 15th. The British fleet proves to be too much for our defenses to handle. During the engagement, which lasts just over 7 weeks, 1,000 cannonballs an hour are fired on Fort Mifflin.
This battle, which is the biggest bombardment of the American Revolution, has become known as The Siege of Fort Mifflin and is remembered each year.
Here, on the eastern rampart, just outside the Main Gate, pockmarks are still visible from British cannonballs during the battle in 1777. These are the scars that Fort Mifflin bears as a memory of the horrific battle that ensued.
