Defending Philadelphia

Just over ten miles southwest of Independence Hall sits the only fort in Philadelphia. Situated at the banks where the Schuylkill River meets the Delaware River, it was strategically placed to defend the most important city in the colonies from possible invasion.

In 1771, the British begin building Fort Island Battery on Mud Island. They do not finish it, though. They leave it abandoned. In 1775, the inevitable Revolution has begun. Knowing that the British will come and attempt to capture our city, the militia gained control of the fort and finished its construction. The main priority is to protect the city from enemy ships coming up the Delaware to the port of Philadelphia. It will not be a lone defender. It will have help from Fort Mercer and Fort Billingsport, both on the New Jersey side of the river.

The three forts are armed and ready for anything that comes their way. Of the three forts, this is the lone survivor of the battle that will become known as the biggest bombardment during the Revolution.

Welcome to Fort Mifflin!
