Front Rank
When on the front lines of battle, the army is trained to stand shoulder to shoulder and move in unison. Muskets are not rifled. A rifled gun has grooves inside the barrel that make the bullet spin, making it more accurate in order to hit their target. Muskets are smooth barrels. They are not accurate at all, barely able to hit anything more than a hundred yards away. This fact is not lost on the army.
Men are trained to stand shoulder to shoulder and move in unison. Firing individually is not as effective as firing in unison. If you have twenty-five soldiers standing shoulder to shoulder all firing at the same time, it creates a wall of musket balls flying at at the enemy, and the chances increase of hitting their target. This is the effectiveness of The Front Rank.
