Stand Guard
As day breaks, these soldiers have been watching vigilantly over Fort Mifflin, ready to take action in the event of an attack. Joseph Plumb Martin (1760-1850) is a Continental soldier stationed at Fort Mifflin during the Siege in 1777, among other battles during the 7 years that he serves. Later, he writes about his experiences in the war. Joseph came to Fort Mifflin in “the cold month of November without provisions, without clothing, not a scrap of either shoes or stockings on my feet or legs.” As these men stand guard, freezing and starving, they know not the hell that is about to be unleashed on such a small, ill-equipped fort. Regardless of their conditions, they stand tall, they stand proud, and they are hungry for a fight.
