The Lone Survivor

While entering the Main Gate, the Fort Mifflin flag commands attention, inviting all who see it in to learn of the long history contained within these walls. Stories about those who died defending our fort. About Joseph Plum Martin (1760-1850), who wrote a firsthand account of the Siege of Fort Mifflin in his published journal. About the prisoners held here during the Civil War. About the abandonment it saw for 3 decades.

With all that it has endured, it is an absolute miracle that it has survived. Of the three forts that were part of the Defense of the Delaware in 1777,
one is a national park but does not have the original fort standing, and the other is an oil refinery today with no visible evidence of the fort. Fort Mifflin remains The Lone Survivor.
