In an era long before smartphones or selfie sticks, Philadelphia resident Robert Cornelius inadvertently became history’s first “selfie” pioneer: in October 1839, amid his family’s lighting and plating business, he crafted a rudimentary daguerreotype camera and produced a self-portrait in his backyard, forever redefining self-representation and modern photography.
